I Am the Change
… that I wish to see in the world.
We need to keep that Mahatma Ghandi quote in mind when we talk about health and happiness. We need to understand that each of us is responsible for their own well-being and needs to choose to live healthier and happier.
It's easier to look for excuses and say that we don't have time to work out, to balance our diet or relax when we feel too stressed. We even blame others for not taking care of our well-being. Instead of looking for reasons why not to and waiting for the world around us to change, maybe we should do something for a healthier and happier tomorrow.
Can we truly say that we are in charge of our own lives? If we can make this a fact, it's easy – we just have to make a decision and change our lifestyle. Soon we're going to feel better.
How to Start
Every beginning is hard, they say. Beginnings of lifestyle changes are even harder. But if we take small steps, do one thing a day and take these steps because we ourselves chose to, it soon becomes easier and natural to us. You might recall from our advice about New Year's resolutions, short-term goals are the best motivation.
So the first thing to do is to stop making excuses. Do I want to change for the better? Of course I want to. Is there something keeping me away? No, there is not. And even if there are some obstacles, we can avoid or overcome them or even turn them to our own advantage.
Keep on Track
It might seem easier to start than to continue on our path to a healthier and happier life. But if we really want to change, we'll follow our short-term goals and get closer to the objective every day. How to do so? Simple. Just take one day - or at the beginning even only one task - at a time. When you complete it, continue with the next.
To make it even easier, let us suggest a few tricks we use ourselves:
- When you go for a walk, get some company; a family member, a friend, a dog. Prefer walking on your own? Take your smartphone with you, listen to some music or take photos.
- Use unproductive time, such as waiting for public transport, travelling by a train or waiting for someone in a café. Read, meditate, daydream … do whatever relaxes you and don't feel guilty about it!
- Pick your hobbies and make them healthy. Instead of just chatting with a friend turn it into a common sports activity, take a photography class in nature, turn cooking into art and do it together with your family … just use your imagination or check the internet.
Once you decide to stop waiting for the world around you to change and it's time to start taking action, you will turn from victim to creator of a better future for you, your loved ones, who will see your change for the better and finally for the whole humanity as there will be some that will notice your progress and believe that they can do it themselves as well.
Of course, there will be times of weakness when your old habits will come back. But don't take it too hard on yourself. Just accept the fact that it happened and that all of us need a little push to get back on track, sometimes.
