PUTTING PATIENTS FIRST – THE FUTURE OF REHABILITATION

In this session, we hosted Robert Scales, Ph.D., Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Preventive Health within the Division for Cardiovascular Diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Together we discussed how to adapt to the COVID-19 situation in the area of rehabilitation. The webinar focused on finding the right balance of applying innovation and technology with the human touch in clinical practice. At the same time, it offered insight into how to deliver therapeutic exercise to patients in their homes.

Robert Scales, Ph.D.

Robert Scales, Ph.D. is the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and he is a volunteer Clinical Professor at Arizona State University. He joined Mayo Clinic in 2008 as an exercise physiologist and in his administrative role, he has provided leadership in the development of a cardiology-based initiative that is designed to prevent heart disease and related conditions.

This includes a partnership with primary care and specialty clinics to conduct medically-directed exercise physiology consultations that promote the American College of Sport’s Medicine’s Exercise is Medicine global initiative. His primary research interest is the application of motivational interviewing and effective provider-patient communication in the healthcare setting. Dr. Scales is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, a Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, an advisory board member of the International Concussion Society and a task force member of the Athlete Development and Sports Rehabilitation section of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.
